Ephrata Chiropractor: What to do if you have been in a car accident?

Have you been involved in any kind of auto accident in the last 5 years? Did you know that even low speed collisions can cause LONG TERM whiplash? The symptoms of whiplash are neck and shoulder pain, back pain, headaches, and depression. If you have some or all of these, you might have whiplash… and not even know it.

Research has proven that even low speed collisions of 5 miles an hour, can cause whiplash. The average head weighs about 8-10 pounds. The head is connected to the neck which has seven small bones. When that car hits you from behind, your neck is pushed in the direction of the force that hits your car. What can you do if you experience the symptoms of whiplash? In recent times, chiropractic has become the best source for getting relief from these symptoms. What might shock you is that 8 of 10 people who see chiropractors complaining of headaches or nervousness, have been in auto accidents.  Chiropractor’s are typically the first physician involved in whiplash pain.

How does someone get whiplash? Try something withme. Tip your head as far back as it will go. Now in your imagination, add another three inches. Ouch. This is what happens when neck injury occurs from an auto accident. The definition of whiplash is: “An involuntary thrust of the head in any direct, during which the head goes in one direction and the neck in the other.” As you can see, when this happens there’s going to be some damage.  The thing to remember is that ONCE YOUR SPINE HAS BEEN SET IN MOTION, IT WILL GET WORSE UNLESS IT IS TREATED AND RESTORED BACK TO ITS PROPER AND ORIGINAL POSITION. What began as a stiff neck and some headaches after an accident… turns into severe loss of mobility of the neck, severe headaches and severe nervousness after a couple years.

Chiropractic is proven effective treating whiplash: If you think your headaches, stiffness, or pain could be the result of whiplash, run (don’t walk) to your chiropractor.

Ephrata Chiropractor on Whiplash – Getting Well Naturally

You’re driving to work and stop for a red light. You’re minding your own business and – bam! – your car rocks forward and backward, slammed in the rear by another car driven by some guy yakking on his cell phone. Or you’re a passenger in a New York City taxi. The driver’s cruising down Fifth Avenue when a teenager suddenly dashes into the intersection, running across the street against the light. The cabbie slams on the brakes and your head rocks forcefully backward and forward.

Or for reasons known only to yourself you decide it’s a good idea to go bungee jumping. You dive into space, the cord extends, and finally the cord is fully played out. Significant physical forces blast through your body as you helplessly bounce back and forth, dangling in the air like a gaffed flying fish.
The result of each of these demonstrations of Isaac Newton’s First Law of Motion? Later that day, or possibly within several days, you begin to experience neck pain. You might also have shoulder pain, headache, nausea, dizziness, and pain or numbness traveling down one or both arms. You have whiplash – a traumatic injury to the muscles, ligaments, and spinal joints of your neck and upper back.1,2

If you’re lucky you’ll get better in a few days. If the injuries are moderate or severe the various complaints will linger and may even get worse. As with any injury or illness, if you’re not getting better right away you need to see your doctor. As you’ve suffered an injury to your head and neck, it may be a good idea to see your doctor as soon as you can, in any case, even if you think the injury is mild.

Your chiropractor is an excellent choice for examination and evaluation of injuries due to whiplash. She will be able to determine the nature and extent of the damage to muscle, ligament, and bone. Taking an x-ray series is a very important part of the evaluation of whiplash, as even seemingly modest forces can result in fracture of one or more vertebras in your neck. Evaluation of nerve function, including both spinal nerves and cranial nerves, is critically important. Pain and/or numbness radiating into one or both arms suggests injury to a cervical nerve root and needs to be thoroughly assessed.

If no fractures have been identified, chiropractic treatment can begin immediately. Over time, chiropractic treatment helps reduce inflammation of injured muscles and ligaments. Over time, chiropractic treatment helps restore normal ranges of motion to your neck and upper back. With this natural form of healing you begin to make incremental, steady progress, recovering the ability to participate in all your daily activities with reduced levels of pain and discomfort.

Chiropractic treatment provides optimal therapy for whiplash injuries, allowing your body to recover and return to normal by utilizing its own restorative powers.3

What Can I Do to Help My Back Pain?

Does Poor Posture Cause Back Pain?
More than you might realize! Think about that little old lady you saw in the grocery store. The one that is hunched over and shuffling behind the grocery cart. Look at your old family pictures and notice who has head tilts and poor posture. Research shows that poor posture can be linked to putting extra stress and strain on your back.
Here are 4 quick tips to improving your posture!
1. If you sit a lot, make it a point to change position every 20 or 30 minutes. Stand up & stretch.
2. Sit with your hips all the way back in the chair. Take advantage of the lumbar support.
3. When standing, make sure you shift your weight from leg to leg.
4. When shoveling snow or raking leaves, alternate your shoveling to each side (5 times per side).

Ephrata Chiropractor Busts the “Most Common Weight Loss Myths”

Our beliefs about weight loss can affect how successful we are in losing weight. If we believed we needed to run five times per week, we might never exercise. Instead if we believed walking is and 15 minutes is exercise it would enable us to engage in a regular program and lose weight. Maintaining proper weight has a multitude of health benefits. As a Chiropractor I see stronger lower backs melt away as the patients weight melts away. I also see patients get well though chiropractic care and then start an exercise program to lose weight. It works both ways.

Busting these myths could be the very thing that fuels your success.

Myth #1: The best way to lose weight is to eliminate carbohydrates.
Here come the Holidays! What does that mean? More calories and especially more carbs. than usual. The best way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories. You need to do this by eating a nutritious diet that includes a variety of foods. Balance is the key. No one particular food group must be avoided to achieve a healthy weight as long as you keep your calories under control. It’s the quality of carbs that is a factor. While it’s smart to avoid refined carbohydrates as often as possible, foods like bread, rice, pasta, cereal and fruit, can all be part of a healthful, balanced diet. Make smarter choices, eat whole grains and beans, over-processed foods (such as white bread) whenever possible. The best way to increase the quality of foods you eat is to shop around the outside of the grocery store. This is where the fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as unprocessed food are. Stay away from processed food.
Myth #2: My parents are over weight, I guess I’m doomed.
While research does shown that genetic relatives tend to have a similar body weight, that doesn’t seal your fate. There are a lot of other factors that are still in your control. Those with a family history of obesity may be more likely to gain weight than those with a slimmer family tree, but that doesn’t mean a healthier diet and proper exercise are less effective. No matter what, the most important factors affecting your weight are how many calories you take in and how much physical activity you get. So hang in there, don’t use genetics as an excuse to give up.
Myth #3: It’s good to diet.
Avoid “crash diets” that cause a sudden weight loss; a slow and steady loss of one to two pounds a week is much healthier. The word diet is the word die with a “T”. Think of a weight management as a way of life, not something you do to lose weight. Making better choices, not necessarily perfect choices is the key. Weight fluctuations may lead to other conditions, such as gallbladder problems and bowel problems and is also very likely to make you to feel depressed. Gradual lose is a sign of a lifestyle change. If you lost one pound per week that would add up to 52 pounds at the end of one year and you would be far more likely to keep it off.
Myth #4: I need to stop eating fat.
The opposite is true. Healthy fats can actually help you with your weight-loss efforts. Of course, eating too much fat overall is linked to disease risk, such as cancer, but overall we all actually need a little fat in our diets to be healthy than most people think. Healthy fats are necessary to absorb important nutrients and help you to feel fuller longer. That fuller feeling will help you eat less overall. Trans fat and saturated fat should be avoided, but unsaturated fats are actually good for you. Enjoy foods like fish, nuts, and olive oil, can actually do your weight and your health good.
Myth #5: Skipping meals is a good way to lose weight.
Skipping meals slows down your metabolism. In fact, meal skippers tend to weigh more than people who eat regular meals spaced out throughout the day. This may be due to meal skippers’ tendency to overeat later in the day, overcompensating for skipping breakfast or lunch. Rather than cutting out entire meals, each meal smaller and quality. As we say in the office your need five to stay alive. That’s five fruits and veggies per day and five meals a day.
Myth #6: Eating Reduced-fat or fat-free foods are the best way to lose weight.
Think of the quality of the food you are eating. The higher the quality, the lower amount you need to consume to be healthy. When we eat reduced-fat foods we also tend to eat more, after all it’s lower calorie.
Myth #7: If I diet, I don’t have to exercise.
Reducing calories too much can actually slow down your metabolism. You can actually cause an increase in your metabolism by increasing muscle mass though regular exercise. Following a too-strict diet can make you feel weak and not give your muscles the fuel they need to grow. I other words to have energy to exercise, you must give your body the fuel it needs. Think of food as fuel for your body. You wouldn’t put Kool-aid in your car to make it go, you would put the best fuel in your car possible. The higher quality gas you put into your car, the better gas milage you get. Your body works the same way. The better quality food you put into your body, the better health you will get. Get on your feet and start dancing in the streets.

Ephrata Chiropractor gives “The Low Down on Low Back Pain”

There are seven major factors that contribute to lower back pain. In addition, poor muscle tone, excess weigh and improper or heavy lifting should also be considered. Also, poor posture and sitting (or standing) in one position for a long time puts extra stress on your spine.

The seven most common causes of low back pain:

1. Muscle strains. Strained muscles, tendons, ligaments or inflamed joints may cause low back pain. Muscle strains usually result from accidents.

2. Spasms. Muscle spasm is a common response to injury. The muscle spasm is designed to immobilize the painful area and prevent further damage. Some spasms are so severe that they will immobilize a person.

3. Herniated disk. This condition occurs when normal wear and tear or exceptional strain causes a disk to rupture. Bulging disks are common and often painless. It becomes painful when excessive bulging or fragments of the disk herniate or break-off and place pressure on nearby nerves. Some doctors call this a “swollen disk”, or a “bulging disk”. To view more about herniated discs go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAq1pfFE1w8 This is a great video that explains hoe herniations happen.

4. Sciatica. Pain may occur in your leg due to inflammation or compression of nerves in your lower back. If sciatica goes untreated, you may end up dragging your leg around!

5. Osteoporosis. This condition causes brittle bones, which leads to a gradual weakening of bones. The result can be painful vertebral compression fractures. People older than 50, particularly women, are prone to osteoporosis. Remember that older woman (who was all bent-over) next door when you were a kid? She had osteoporosis.

6. Osteoarthritis. This degenerative joint condition affects nearly everyone past age 60. Overworking, injuries, and aging can slowly cause deterioration of cartilage, the protective tissue that covers the surface of the joints of your vertebrae. When joints are injured and heal improperly they become susceptible to decay.

7. Fibromyalgia. This chronic syndrome produces achy, tender and stiff muscles and joints where tendons attach to your bones. Pain is usually worse after inactivity and improves with movement and exercise.
